Artist’s Statement
I love pastels – the feel of the pastel in my hand, how it reacts to the paper’s surface, the fact that it is pure, raw pigment. There is an amazing journey that occurs between the initial vision and the framed piece of art. I want the viewer to experience some of that journey. My work is impressionistic in the sense that strokes of color are placed next to each other to interpret a moment in time. At some point it becomes more expressionistic as the bold strokes of color express my emotional reaction to what’s happening on the canvas. I draw my subject matter from my surroundings. The atmosphere created by light and shadow is inspiring with the simplest of elements, like a rock, a single fence post, a cow, an abandoned shed, a field. My influences have come from my teachers, my peers, my family, and they continue to be my inspiration.
Bio/Resume
After enjoying many years in Florida while raising two daughters, Tom, his wife, Tibby, and weimaraner Luke, now reside in the north Georgia mountains near Ellijay, GA. Tom received his bachelor’s degree in art from Florida State University, and studied with Robert Brackman, William Schultz and Charles Reid. Tom has taught drawing and painting classes. He is a member of the Southeastern Pastel Society, and the Gilmer Arts and Heritage Association located in Ellijay, GA. He served as president of the Melbourne Art Students Guild as well as the Fifth Avenue Art Gallery where his work is available.
Parker's awards include Best of Show, Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival; Grumbacher Award, Florida Pastel Association; Judges Selection, Walt Disney World Festival of the Masters; Award of Distinction, St. Augustine Art Festival; juried exhibition, Pastel Society of America. Collections include Walt Disney World Corporation, Alabama Power Corporation, City of Winter Park, Brevard Art Museum, as well as numerous private collections in the United States and abroad.
